Festival delle Lanterne

E’ la settimana del Boun Lai Heua Fai, il Festival della Luce e delle Barche di Fuoco.
Nella notte di luna piena, la tranquilla atmosfera di Luang Prabang, antica capitale del Laos, costeggiata dal fiume Mekong, si accende di luci e colori.
Alcuni giorni prima della luna piena, sin dalle prime ore del mattino, dopo il consueto Tak Bak, i giovani Monaci novizi si dedicano ai preparativi della festa: decorano i monasteri con lanterne di metallo e carte colorate e costruiscono barche in legno di bambù, banano e carta.
Indaffarati a disporre ordinatamente per terra le lanterne ed a tirare i cavi aerei che le sostengono da una parte all’altra dei viali che circondano i monasteri, alternano lanterne di colore diverso dando luogo ad un giardino fiorito che di sera splenderà di luce, illuminato da centinaia di luci.
Altri monaci sono impegnati nella costruzione e decorazione di imbarcazioni che saranno varate insieme ad altre barche costruite dalla gente locale dei vicini villaggi, che saranno trascinate dalla corrente, precedute e seguite da una scia di luci poste sulle offerte floreali lasciate galleggiare dei fedeli sulle acque del Mekong.
In questa notte l’atmosfera di Luang Prabang diventa magica.

It is the week of the Boun Lai Heua Fai, the Festival of Light and Fire Boats.
On the night of the full moon, the peaceful atmosphere of Luang Prabang, the ancient capital of Laos, bordered by the Mekong River, lights up with lights and colors.
A few days before the full moon, from the early hours of the morning, after the usual Tak Bak, the young novice monks dedicate themselves to the preparations for the festival: they decorate the monasteries with metal lanterns and colored papers and build boats in bamboo wood, banana and paper.
Busy arranging the lanterns neatly on the ground and pulling the overhead cables that support them from one side of the avenues surrounding the monasteries to the other, they alternate lanterns of different colors giving rise to a flower garden that in the evening will shine with light, illuminated by hundreds of lights.
Other monks are engaged in the construction and decoration of boats that will be launched together with other boats built by the local people of the nearby villages, which will be dragged by the current, preceded and followed by a trail of lights placed on the floral offerings left floating by the faithful on the waters of the Mekong.
On this night the atmosphere of Luang Prabang becomes magical.
